Loretta M. Burch, 96, of Carmichaels, Pa. died Sunday, May 11, 2008 in the Assisted Living at Evergreen, Waynesburg, Pa. She was born August 22, 1911 in Brownsville, Pa., a daughter of the late Patrick A. and Mayme (Campbell) McGinty.
Mrs. Burch was a 1929 graduate of South Brownsville High School and a graduate of California Normal School (California University of Pennsylvania). She resided in Carmichaels since 1948 where she was a member of the Greene Valley Presbyterian Church. In the Church, she served as a Sunday school teacher and president of the Women's Association. Before the Church became affiliated with Presbyterian Church in America, Mrs. Burch served as a trustee during the time of the merger of the area Presbyterian churches.
Mrs. Burch taught at Brownsville Township Elementary School, Luzerne Township Elementary School and Carmichaels Area Elementary and Junior High Schools. She was a member of the Pennsylvania State Education Association, the National Educational Association and the A.A.R.P. Mrs. Burch was a past president of the Town and Country Garden Club and the Business and Professional Women. She served on the site counsel as secretary of the Carmichaels Senior Center and as the news reporter for the Senior Times since 1977. Mrs. Burch composed and edited the Carmichaels Lions Club bulletin for over 20 years and was a Meals on Wheels provider for a number of years. Her husband, Loman Russell Burch, died August 24, 1960.
Surviving are a son, Kenneth P. Burch and his wife, Dianne of Catonsville, Md.; two grandsons, Jason L. Burch and his wife, Ann Wallace and Todd D. Burch and his wife, Chantha; four great grandchildren, Molly, Abigail, Camille and Emilie; a daughter-in-law, Catherine Burch of Carmichaels and special friends, Ed and Becky Chess and their family. Deceased is a son, Ronald L. Burch, a brother, James L. McGinty and a sister, Ethel McGinty.
Family and friends are welcomed from 7 to 9 P.M. Tuesday and 2 to 4 P.M. and 7 to 9 P.M. Wednesday in the Yoskovich Funeral Home, Carmichaels, Pa. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, May 15, 2008 in the Greene Valley Presbyterian Church, 104 East Greene Street, Carmichaels. The Revs. P. Keith Larson and Harold O. Kelley will officiate. Interment will follow in Laurel Point Cemetery, Carmichaels.

Mitchell Landman Miller, known by “Roxi”, of Carmichaels, went home to her Lord Sunday, November 8, 2020, in the home of her daughter, Carol Metcalf, in Carmichaels, surrounded by her family. She was born June 26, 1944, in Cumberland Township, Greene County, to Frank and Mary Kunkle Mitchell.
Roxi was a member of the Class of 1962 of Cumberland Township High School in Carmichaels. She completed the licensed practical nurse program at the Greene County Vo-Tech in 1981 and later received her registered nursing certificate in 1997 at the age of 53 from the Harrisburg Community College. She worked at Greene County Memorial Hospital in Waynesburg, Monongalia General Hospital in Morgantown, W.Va., Beverly Healthcare in Gettysburg, and Tripil in Uniontown. Roxie was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Carmichaels, the St. Hugh’s Senior Activity Group, Carmichaels, and a lifetime member with the Carmichaels Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3491 Women’s Auxiliary.
Her first husband, David Carl Landman, whom she married February 22, 1964, died December 14, 1976. She then married Donald Wayne Miller March 20, 1982, and he passed April 3, 2004.
Left to cherish her memory are three daughters and their spouses, Mary Jean Pratt (Christopher) and Carol Metcalf (Terry), all of Carmichaels, and Marlene Nelson (Rick) of Nemacolin; two sons, Daniel Whipkey of Brave and Wayne Whipkey of Aleppo; daughter-in-law Stephanie Whipkey-Patterson of Aleppo.
Roxi’s biggest blessing in life was being called “Nannie” by her 12 grandchildren, Jacki Cupples (James A.), Brandy Shreve, Jason Caldwell, Gina Riggleman, Tabitha Shumam, Kristy Borovichka (Nathan), Rachael Pratt, Patrick Pratt, Stephanie Pratt, Jessica Metcalf, Jeremy Nelson and Garrett Nelson. She was “Grandmaw” to 20 great-grandchildren and was expecting another grandson, Braxton, later this month and her first great-great-granddaughter, Amelia Lou, in February.
Also surviving are her siblings and their spouses, Ruth Enci (John) of Carmichaels, Minister Zane Mitchell (Dolores) of Carmichaels and Charles “Kunkle” Mitchell (Janie) of Crucible; and a beloved brother-in-law, Ronald Boord of Uniontown. Roxi’s two special friends were Marilyn Banghart and Frances Pratt.
Deceased, in addition to her two husbands and parents, are a sister, Sarah Boord; and brothers J. C., Gardner and William.
Roxi was at home when she passed and was provided the best care by her daughters, Carol, with whom she resided, and Mary Jean. Also, supportive care was provided by Amedisys Hospice. The family would like to express a special thank you to Father Frazier, Pastor Becky, Amedisys Pastor Dave, Amedisys Home Health nurse Novosha, Amedisys Hospice nurses and aides and the ambulance service of EMS Southwest.
The daughters are respecting Roxi’s wishes of no public visitation and a private burial in Gettysburg. A celebration of life dinner will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the direction of YOSKOVICH FUNERAL HOME, Carmichaels.
Roxi’s greatest joy in her life was being a nurse. A scholarship in her honor has been established for the Licensed Practical Nurse Program at the Greene County Career and Technology Center, Waynesburg.

Clyde S. Mundell, 83, of RD 1, Carmichaels, died at 12:55 p.m. Sunday, April 11, 1982 at Washington Hospital. Born October 14, 1898 in Mundell Hollow, he was a son of the late Edward T. and Rosa Donham Mundell.
He is survived by his wife, M. Audrey Boord Mundell. He was a member of the Sugar Grove Baptist Church. He was a graduate of California-Normal School and taught in the Nicholson Township and Smock Hill public schools, where he also served as principal. He also served as a penmanship supervisor for the P.O. Peterson Writing System for 16 years. He taught at the Nemacolin School until his retirement in 1964. He served with the U.S. Army in World War I. He was a member of Carmichaels Grange 1389 and was named Carmichaels 'Man of the Year' in 1976.In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. John (Shirley) Engel of Canonsburg; four sons, Wallace of Johnstown, Wilbur of Chillicoche, Ohio, Robert of Pittsburgh and Dale of Canonsburg; two sisters, Mrs. Russell (Helen) Boord of St. Petersburg, Florida and Mrs. David (Grace) Davies of R. D. 1, Greensboro; 17 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two infant sons, Roger Dean and Donald Clyde.
Democrat Messenger April 12, 1982Paul Moredock Long, 74, of Carmichaels, Greene County, Penn. died at 5:30 PM Sunday, July 27, 1997, at Rolling Meadows Nursing Home, Waynesburg.
He was born December 18, 1922, in Cumberland Township, a son of Reed Long and Edna Moredock Long.Mr Long was a 1941 graduate of Cumberland Township High School in Carmichaels, received a bachelor of science degree from Waynesburg College and a masters degree in education from West Virginia University. He lived in Carmichaels his entire life and was a member of the Greene Valley Presbyterian Church of Carmichaels where he served as deacon. In 1948 Mr Long founded the Long Insurance Agency in Carmicheals and in 1952 he created the Paul M Long Real Estate Agency. He had operated the agency for more than 40 years. He was also a broker in the coal industry.
Mr Long worked as a chemist at the U S Steel Robena Mine and in 1958 began teaching at Carmichaels Area School District. He later became an elementary principal in the Jefferson-Morgan School district until his retirement in 1984.
He served in the U S Army during World War II and was a member of the Brooks Crago American Legion Post 816 of Rices Landing. Mr Long was also a member of Valley Lodge No 459, F & A M, Masontown, the Uniontown Lodge of Perfection and the Scottish Rite Bodies in the Valley of Pittsburgh, the Isaac Walton Leage, the Pennsylvania Realtors Association, the Pennsylvania State Education Association, the AARP and was a former member of the Syria Temple AAONMS. He had also served on the Board of Directors of the Flenniken Memorial Library.
His wife, Grace Elizabeth Lively Long, whome he married January 27, 1946, survives. Surviving in addition to his wife are one son, Dr James Reed Long of Monroeville; one daughter, Nancy Elizabeth Beach of Sandusky, Ohio; three brothers, Wayne M Long; and Robert E Long, both of Carmichaels; and Louis Long of Rices Landing; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased is one sister, Elma Kantorick.
Miss Elizabeth Richey, 68 years, well known Carmichaels resident, died Saturday morning, February 18, 1956, in her home on East South Street. She had not been well for some time, but death was unexpected.
Miss Richey was a daughter of Calvin and Dorcas Phillips Richey, and was born December 27, 1887, at Carmichaels, where she had spent her life. She was a graduate of California Normal School, now California State Teacher's College, and had taught in the Nemacolin school for 35 years. Previously she had operated a millinery store and also a restaurant.
On Thursday Miss Richey was to receive the Daughters of the American Revolution Award from Greene Academy Chapter for her services to her church, profession and community. She was a member of the Carmichaels Presbyterian Church and had served as Sunday School Superintendent. She was also a member of the Carmichaels Cumberland Township Women's Civic Club and Carmichaels Garden Club.Surviving is one brother, George Richey of Carmichaels. A sister, Miss Sarah Richey and two brothers, Lee and Larry are deceased.

J. Jay Steele, 93, of Enumclaw, Wash., formerly of Carmichaels, died February the 16th 1999.
He was born May 14th 1905, in Davistown, a son of Jesse and Cora Garard Steele, and had lived in Enumclaw for the past 16 years.
He was a member of John Corbly Baptist Church in Garards Fort.
Mr. Steele taught for many years in Cumberland Township School District. He was past president of Greene County retired teachers association, and member of the National Education Association and Pennsylvania State Teachers Association.
Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Alice Rose Steele; a son, Carl Ross Steele of Los Angeles, California; A daughter, Marlene Lawrence of Enumclaw; a sister, Viola Willis of Shreveport, La; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Deceased is a brother Maynard Steele.
A memorial service was held in Week’s Funeral Home, Enumclaw, with the Reverend O. A. Crawford officiating. Memorials may be made to a favorite charity.
From an early age, her ambition was to teach. She earned her teaching certification from California Normal School and taught in Greene County schools for many years. Most of her career was spent in Nemacolin School, teaching English, writing composition, and American history to students in grades seven and eight. She loved the students and her profession.
Mrs. Willis was a member of First United Methodist Church of Carmichaels and a member of it's choir. She sang in a gospel trio and was soloist in community musical programs. She was a member of National and Pa. Education associations, Carmichaels Women's Civic Club, John Corbley Assn. and Greene Academy of Art. In 1931 she married LeRoy Willis, who is deceased.
Surviving are a daughter, Rita Schuckers of Shreveport, with whom she made her home since 1996; a son-in-law, Robert Heisse of Willow Street; a sister-in-law Alice Steele of Linden, Wash., grandchildren Jeff Schuckers of Valley View, Texas, Brent Schuckers of Shreveport, Jonathan (Jennifer) Heisse and Melissa (Stanley) Mattern of Lancaster County; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are two brothers, Jay and Maynard; a daughter, Bonnie Heisse; and a son-in-law, D. Gordon Schuckers. A service to celebrate her life will be held Wednesday, April 2 in Shreveport.
