Transfiguration Church in Mount Pleasant, PA
Spissky Stvrtok, Slovakia
The church in the settlement, recorded in 1263 as Sancti Ladislai, was built in the late 13th century, transitioning from Romanesque to Gothic styles. A late-Gothic chapel, likely initiated by the Thurzon family, was added around the mid-15th century to showcase their political and cultural influence. The church's interior was adorned with paintings soon after its completion.
During the Reformation, Protestants occupied the church, forcing Catholics to use the chapel until they regained the building in 1671. The church was transformed in the Baroque style in 1693 but suffered fire damage in 1869. It was renovated in a neo-Gothic style between 1899-1901, and a comprehensive renovation began in 2020.
Architecturally, the church features a rectangular nave, a square-like chancel, a sacristy, and a four-sided tower. The nave originally had a wooden ceiling, while the chancel and sacristy had cross-rib vaults. A mid-15th century chapel addition, higher than the nave, included rich architectural details and a steep gable roof. The chapel's interior was divided into two floors, with the upper part serving as an oratory and the lower part likely as a funeral crypt. The chapel's design drew inspiration from Gothic elements seen in Sainte Chapelle in Paris and the Franciscan church in Bratislava.
