Wierzchosławice is a village in Poland's Lesser Poland Voivodeship, Tarnów County, and the seat of the Wierzchosławice Commune.
First mentioned in 1326, it is notable for being the birthplace of Wincenty Witos, whose farmstead is now a museum. The village features a historic parish church, a World War I cemetery, and the Polish Village Culture Center.
Located on the eastern edge of Podgórze Bocheńskie, near the Dunajec valley, Wierzchosławice is about 10 km west of Tarnów. The village has a rich history, having been owned by various noble families, including the Tarnowski and Sanguszko families. It was part of the Austrian Empire after the First Partition of Poland in 1772.
Significant developments occurred in the early 20th century under Wincenty Witos, who became mayor in 1909. His leadership saw the establishment of various community institutions. During World War I, the village suffered considerable damage, and many inhabitants died.
In the Second Polish Republic, Wierzchosławice became a center for the peasant movement. The village endured hardships during World War II, including Nazi occupation and forced labor. Post-war, it saw agricultural reforms and continued to honor Witos' legacy.
Today, Wierzchosławice is a large suburban village with a population of 3,340 as of 2021. It hosts several cultural and educational institutions and is known for its historical monuments and the Wincenty Witos Museum.
